Anaphoric relations in Jakaltek
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper will provide an LFG-based analysis of anaphoric relations in possessive and prepositional constructions in Jakaltek (an ergative Mayan language). In doing so it not only offers a solution to some previously unaccounted for language-internal incongruities, but also shows Jakaltek’s realisation of anaphoric relations of this type to be of typological and theoretical significance. Essentially, I show that the general anaphoric co-indexing system of Jakaltek is based on structure sharing and the relative distribution of noun classifiers. First I provide a general description of Jakaltek anaphoric relations in constructions involving possessives or prepositional pronouns and the constraints to which they are subject. Then I present an analysis of the conditions governing these relations. With the exception of clause bound anaphoric constructions, concrete nouns in Jakaltek are obligatorily accompanied by a noun classifier (henceforth NC), attributing the noun to one of twenty-one semantic classes. When occurring without a noun, a subset of these NC function as personal pronouns. Possessed NPs, formed by a possessive marker prefixed to the noun, must also take a NC, always in agreement with the possessor. Abstract nouns have no noun classifier. As observed in Craig (1977) and Day (1973), within the clause, the co-indexing of arguments is signalled by the absence of the otherwise obligatory NC on the second element in the anaphoric relation, as in (1) and (2). If the NC is present, no bound reading is possible (3).

متن کاملAnnotation of anaphoric relations and topic continuity in Japanese conversation
This paper proposes a basic scheme for annotating anaphoric relations in Japanese conversations. More specifically, we propose methods of (i) dividing discourse segments into meaningful units, (ii) identifying zero pronouns and other overt anaphors, (iii) classifying zero pronouns, and (iv) identifying anaphoric relations. We discuss various kinds of problems involved in the annotation mainly c...
متن کاملAn Approach To Sentence-Level Anaphora In Machine Translation
Theoretical research in the area of machine translation usually involves the search for and creation of an appropriate formalism. An important issue in this respect is the way in which the compositionality of translation is to be defined. In this paper, we will introduce the anaphoric component of the Mimo formalism. It makes the definition and translation of anaphoric relations possible, relat...
متن کاملOn the relation between coherence relations and anaphoric demonstratives in German
Recent research suggests that pronoun interpretation is guided by the semantic coherence relations between clauses. However, it is not yet wellunderstood whether coherence effects extend to other anaphoric expressions beyond pronouns. We report an experiment on German, a language in which human antecedents can be referred to both with personal and demonstrative pronouns. How do anaphoric demons...
متن کاملEFL Learners' Sensitivity to Linguistic and Discourse Factors in the Process of Anaphoric Resolution
The readers' ability to integrate current information with given information has been considered as an important component of reading comprehension process. One aspect of this integration process involves anaphoric resolution. The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of anaphoric resolution, focusing on inferential rigidity of different types of anaphoric ties. Ninety EFL learner...
